LNAT India
Many students from India wish to take the LNAT in order to apply to study law at a UK university.
The LNAT is used by several universities in the UK, including some very prestigious institutions, to help select students for their undergraduate Law courses. If a student from India is planning to apply to Law programs at these universities, they would need to take the LNAT as part of their application.
However there are also various other reasons why an Indian student may wish to take the LNAT test even if they wish to study law in India or in another country outside the UK.
These may include:
Demonstrating Aptitude: The LNAT is designed to measure skills that are important for the study of Law, including reading comprehension, interpretation, analysis, and argumentation. It's not based on prior knowledge or study of Law. Therefore, students can use the LNAT to demonstrate their aptitude for these skills, regardless of their background or where they wish to study.
Competitive Edge: In highly competitive fields like Law, any advantage can make a difference. A strong performance on the LNAT can make a candidate stand out in the admissions process.
Language Proficiency: Since the LNAT is conducted in English, performing well on the test can also demonstrate a student's proficiency in English, which is important for studying in the UK, the USA or other English speaking countries.
Can You Practice Law In India With A UK Law Degree?
In order to practice law in India, you must pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI), regardless of where you earned your law degree.
Indian students who have obtained a law degree from a foreign country like the UK can practice in India, but there are certain conditions they must meet:
Degree Recognition: The law degree must be recognized by the Bar Council of India. They have set certain requirements that law degrees from foreign universities must meet.
Enrollment with State Bar Council: Before sitting for the All India Bar Examination, the candidate must enroll as an advocate with a State Bar Council.
All India Bar Examination (AIBE): After enrollment, the candidate must pass the AIBE to practice law in India.
One Year Bridge Course: As of 2021, the BCI is considering the introduction of a mandatory one-year 'bridge course' for Indian students with foreign law degrees who want to practice in India. This would include an internship or clerkship under a senior advocate.
How Many Indian Students Study Law In The UK?
